RapidEye over LIDAR Kakadu National Park

Abstract or Summary RapidEye visible, red edge and near infrared data (of 6.5 m spatial resolution) were obtained for Kakadu NP through the Planet Lab’s Inc. Ambassador Program. Four scenes each from 2014 and 2016 were calibrated to surface reflectance using the ARCSI software (Bunting et al., 2017) and subsequently combined into a two mosaics, one for each year. From each mosaic, the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated and compared. The difference in the NDVI between 2016 and 2014 indicates the extent of mangrove dieback, which was observed from late 2015.

Data quality All RapidEye data were radiometrically calibrated using coefficients provided in RSGISLib and cloud screened using a random forest classifier. The iamges were then corrected to surface reflectance using the Atmospheric and Radiometric Correction of Satellite Imagery (ARCSI) developed at Aberystwyth University (Bunting et al., 2017). This software is freely available and open source. ARCSI makes use of the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) radiative transfer model, and a Py6S python binding allows the 6S code to be accessed directly as python objects. The NDVI images for 2014 and 2016 and the NDVI difference image were generated using RSGISLib.
