LIDAR data, Kakadu NP

Link to the data this data set consists of 10 .tif files (subsets) representing mosaics of canopy height models (CHMs; 5 files) and underlying Digital Terrain Models (DTMs; 5 files) for expansive areas of mangroves in Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia, namely those occurring in the Wildman River, West Alligator, South Alligator and East Alligator Rivers and Field Island. The raw data are available from the CSIRO Data Access Portal (see links below). The list and details of the CHMs and DTMs derived from the tiled data is given in the section ‘File Attributes’. Georeferencing and other information on image dimensions of the files are provided in the section on Spatial and Temporal extents.

Abstract or Summary Fugro Spatial Solutions (FSS) performed an airborne LIDAR survey over Kakadu National Park between October 22 2011 and 16th November 2011. A Leica ALS60 (S/N: 6145) was used, with this flown on an FSS aircraft. The original data were provided as 0.5m Contours maps as shape files 4903 tiled files (1km x1km) with DBF, PRJ and SHX support files and these can be accessed at: http://doi.org/10.4225/08/547CFB0289CC1 . For the Wildman, West, South and East Alligator River and Field Island mangroves, CHMs and DTMs were generated by extracting and mosaicking tiles that intersected mangroves identified within 1991 from aerial photograph orthomosaics. The CHM was used to re-register these orthomosaics such that they aligned as they had been generated originally using Ground Control Points taken from topographic maps.

Data quality The LIDAR data were positioned using a DGPS base-station at Darwin Airport. A ground control survey was carried out by FSS surveyors to determine ground positions and height for control and check points throughout the area over coverage.
