Towards The Global Terrestrial Observing System

The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network organised a high-level round-table meeting to explore the development of collaborative Global Terrestrial Observing System. The meeting was attended by the delegates from different organisations from around the world including International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER), National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), USA; Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems (AnaEE), Europe; South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON); Japan Long-Term Ecological Research (JaLTER); Philippine Long-Term Ecological Research (PhilTER), Chinese Ecological Research Network (CERN) and Korean Ecological Observatory Network (KEON). The round-table was held on 7th of March in Brisbane in conjunction with the world science festival. The round-table had a series of presentations from the delegates followed by a discussion and future actions. All the presentations are available for a quick view and download from a round-table presentation page.

Round table discussion:

  • Why do we need a global observatory?
  • What is an infrastructure approach?
  • Monitoring or experimentation?
  • What are the existing linkages and how do we build upon them?
  • How do we foster global collaboration?
  • What are examples of things that have worked well/poorly?
  • What have we (as discrete networks) learned that informs the development of this concept?

3:30 - 3:45pm

Afternoon tea

Round table discussion continued:

  • How do we fund a global network?
  • At what scales do we report?
  • What is NOT part of a global observatory?
  • What do we need that we don’t have?
  • Do we change or can we integrate?
  • What framework will we use?
  • Who is missing from this discussion?
  • What are the next steps and priorities?
  • Are larger scale global meetings required in the future?
