Acoustic data can be uploaded using a SFTP client. If you do not have one already, download and install a SFTP client first. Some free desktop clients are:

  • Cyberduck (Windows and Mac)

    • Website: https://cyberduck.io

    • Notes: Mac user can download the software for free from the website (zipped) instead of paid version from the Mac App Store

General settings for all clients

Use the following settings:

  • Host (or hostname): bioacoustics.tern.org.au

  • Port: 22

  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH)

  • Username and Password: each SuperSite is given its own username and password for uploading acoustic data. If you do not have a Username and Password, please contact esupport@tern.org.au

If using FileZilla, you can follow more detailed instructions below.

Using FileZilla to upload files

  1. Open FileZilla and select from the Main Menu: `File` > `Site Manager…`

  2. Click the [New Site] button and give it a name (e.g. SuperSites BioAcoustics)

  3. In the General tab, fill out the following details:

    • Host (or hostname): bioacoustics.tern.or.au

    • Port: 22

    • Protocol: SFTP (SSH)

    • Logon Type: Normal

    • Enter the Username and Password you have been provided for acoustic data uploads. If you do not have a Username and Password, please contact esupport@tern.org.au

You do not need to worry about any of the other tabs.

  1. Select the new site that you just created and click ‘Connect’ to connect to the upload site.

  2. On the left site of the screen (called Local site) you will see directories in your local computer, i.e. the source. Navigate to the folder where you stored the data. When you click on a folder in the top left panel, the content of that folder is listed in the bottom left panel.

  3. On the right side of the screen (called Remote site) you will see directories in the remote connection that are specific to your SuperSite. These are your target directories. For example if your site is KarawathaForestPark, you will see two directories, one for each of the sensors at Karawatha (KarawathaForestPark01 and KarawathaForestPark02).

  4. To upload new files from your computer (Local site) to the sensor folders in bioacoustics.tern.org.au (Remote site) drag and drop the relevant files on the left side panel to the correct folder in the right side panel.

Important notes

  1. All files must be copied directly under the sensor folder. There should be no subfolders within the sensor folder. This would prevent data ingestion.

  2. Since subfolders are not allowed, if you need to upload multiple txt files with the same name, e.g. ALIC02_Sensor-A.txt and ALIC02_Sensor-A.txt, the second file will overwrite the first one. To avoid this, before uploading the files please rename them by adding a progressive number at the end, e.g. ALIC02_Sensor-A_01.txt, ALIC02_Sensor-A_02.txt.

  3. Please notify us at esupport@tern.org.au for any change in recording conditions, e.g. changes in location, instrument make and model, and recording settings (sampling rate, depth, number of channels, gain).

  4. If an acoustic sensor is moved to a new location within the site or an additional sensor is installed, please notify us. We will assign a new name to the sensor and create a new sensor folder.
