TDDP and CARE Principles - Data Access Request process

CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance has been implemented alongside the existing FAIR Prinicples in early 2026 as Indigenous related data are now being published within the TERN Data Discovery Portal.

Researches create an entry for data associated with CARE based princples in the TERN SHaRED application, the record is then published in the TERN Data Discovery Portal, post successful curation and creation.

Access Request Process

The figure below displays the results page of a search that has been performed.

In order to view and/or access the metadata for the record, you can click on the View Metadata button. This then navigates to the image as below.

The difference is, CARE related datasets are protected and hence a lock icon is displayed indicating that it is restricted. The lock icon needs to be clicked to request an access to the dataset. The screen below is invoked once the lock icon is selected.

A brief description for the reason for the request is required. Provide sufficient evidence to the need to access this dataset. This reason will used for the assessment and approval process

Request Assessment and Approval Process

The request generally takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks to assess.
Your requests are sent to the custodians and they will communicate with the traditional owners of the site to determine an outcome.

The information provided at the time of Access Request is used to determine the approval process.
