Selecting Samples to Request Access

Welcome to TERN Knowledge Base

Selecting Samples to Request Access

Users should create or sign into their account before adding samples to a sample cart. If users are not signed in, they will be prompted to do so before they can request access to samples.

For more information on creating or signing into TERN accounts, see Creating Accounts and Signing-In to TERN Data Applications and Services.

Users can request access to samples via EcoPlots, however, they first need to identify the samples they are interested in and submit an expression of Interest (EOI). The TERN Samples team will then contact the users to discuss access to the requested samples. This section will provide an overview of selecting samples and make request to access them.

To select samples to request access, users should check the box against the sample(s) they wish to obtain. For users who wish to access all samples in their refined search results, there is also a “select all” function. Note that if desired, users can choose to request multiple sample types in one go.

Users can navigate between the tabs to select different types of samples to request. As users select samples in each tab, they will see the total count of samples increase on the Sample shopping cart button.

Once samples are selected, click the “Get Samples” button to add them to the sample cart. Note that users will be prompted to sign-in to their TERN account at this point if they have not already done this. Please refer to Creating Accounts and Signing-In to TERN Data Applications and Services for further information on TERN accounts, including how to register an account.

If the user is logged in, clicking “Get Samples” will redirect the user to the sample cart page, listing the samples the user has selected to request by sample type. If needed, users can remove samples from their sample cart using the “x” button next to the sample, or add further samples by clicking the “Add more samples” button.

Users can also choose to return to the search from this page, which allows them to add further samples (including new sample types) to the sample cart.

Different sample types will show different information in the Sample Cart. For example, Plant Tissue Samples and Plant Voucher Specimens show the scientific name of the sample with Plant Tissue Samples also showing the genetic voucher for the sample. In contrast, samples related to soils may show information such as the sub-site, soil horizon or soil depth.

When users have added all the samples they wish to request to their sample cart, the next step is to add a title and if desired a description to the contents of the sample cart. Once a title is added, users are able to save the sample cart contents as a “package”, which is then accessible from their My Sample Requests page. This then allows users to complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form to access the samples at a later date. Alternatively, users can proceed directly to the EOI form from the sample cart page (noting that a Title is also required before users can proceed).

Only one draft sample cart can be saved in a user’s account at a time.

Users can edit the samples within a draft sample cart at any time until the EOI is submitted. For further information how to edit a saved sample cart, please see Viewing and Editing Sample Requests.
